Sugar, Paper, Work 2014
Taking from the history of the sugar cane industry in Queensland, Sugar, Paper, Work questions local Australian histories and identities.
I built a paper making station where I made paper from sugar cane fibre and asked people to draw on the paper with stencils I had made containing reference to various aspects of the industry. In this project, I considered the indentured labour and “black birding” that happened and how the actual industry history has been hidden like with many histories within colonial Australia. I also considered my own labour as a young artist within an educational institution.
